Food & Drought Relief
Kenya continues to face the devastating effects of prolonged drought, with millions struggling through worsening food and water shortages after many failed rainy seasons. In Turkana—one of the country’s hardest-hit regions—families have lost livestock, crops have failed and parents are struggling to provide even basic meals for their children.
For communities in Turkana, daily life has become increasingly difficult. Families are forced to walk long distances in search of water while weakened livestock—their source of food and income—continue to die in the harsh conditions.
Feed The Hungry is providing emergency food relief in Turkana, where several Early Childhood Education and Development outreaches were established last year, helping vulnerable children and families affected by drought and ongoing food insecurity.
The crisis has also affected Nairobi and surrounding regions, where low rainfall, rapid population growth and pressure on underground aquifers have caused serious water shortages. All of Kibera, including Soweto Academy, were left without reliable water access for some time and families reached crisis point.
Plans were being made to transport water from 50–60 miles away using a borrowed water tanker. However, Feed The Hungry provided funding for repairs to the well at Soweto Academy. Engineers discovered a silt blockage had stopped it from producing water. After repairs were made, families relying on the Academy for its water station once again have access to clean water.
Despite the hardship, communities continue to show extraordinary resilience. Through the support of Feed The Hungry and our generous donors, vulnerable children and families are receiving life-saving food, clean water and hope for the future.
