Angok’s Story: Your Giving in Action

Tragically, both Angok’s parents were killed in the war. He and his siblings escaped to Uganda. Without a parent to provide, he says he relied on God to meet his every need.

As the fighting in South Sudan escalated, little Angok heard his parents arguing. His mother pleaded to leave for Uganda; his father insisted the fighting would soon die down and there was no need to leave. In the end, his mother smuggled Angok and his siblings out and caught a boat across the lake.

They crossed the border safely, but sadly, his mother lost her baby during the frantic escape. Eventually arriving safely in Uganda, but drowning in loss, grief and sorrow, Angok’s mother soon became overwhelmed at the desperate situation. Tragically, less than a month later, Angok’s mother fell sick and died, despite receiving medical assistance. Now Angok was orphaned and relying on his older sister – still in primary school – to look after him.

At school, Angok found solace in his best friend, who lent him pens and pencils to write down the lessons. He found another reason to go to school when Feed The Hungry began providing hot, nutritious meals. With a good meal each day, he is more alert in class, better able to understand the lesson, and more hopeful for the future.

“If there’s no food here at school, and there’s no food from home, you will not be alive. You will just die,” he says. “But if there’s food here at school, at least, then … that is good for a school child!”
