Roads flooded with rain, homes swallowed by landslides, the air thick with the smell of mud and despair. This is the scene in Kandy. Debs Edirisinghe, a friend and partner on the ground with Child Action Lanka, described it as a feeling of hopelessness.
“It feels like a wave of destruction hit the island. People are once again faced with hopelessness. Broken bridges, roads, landslide of houses. It reminds me of the 2006 Tsunami. Over 1 million people have been affected islandwide, with hundreds dead and hundreds missing” said Debs.
The death toll of this devastating flood has surpassed 355, with at least 366 more missing and over 20,000 homes destroyed. The President of Sri Lanka has called it the “most challenging natural disaster” in Sri Lanka’s history. The monumental task of rescuing and recovering trapped communities has begun, with the immediate need for food, clean water and medicine.
Child Action Lanka have stepped in immediately, delivering hot meals and essential aid to communities in dire need. Friends like you are a vital part of the relief effort.
