Bringing joy this Christmas to Alonyo

Born in South Sudan, Alonyo has lived through unimaginable suffering. When she was just five years old, war tore her family apart.

“I came here in 2016. There was a war where we were staying. They killed very many people,” she shares softly.

Alonyo describes fleeing through horrors no child should endure: “When you’re walking, you just walk where people are now dead. You move while crying, you move while carrying things.”

Her journey brought her to Uganda, where she arrived alone—her entire family lost to violence. It was the kindness of a stranger, a woman Alonyo now calls her stepmother, that gave her hope. Yet, life in the refugee settlement was harsh.

“I came to school, but I had no uniform,” Alonyo recalls. “I had to go back home from school. I go and dig in people’s gardens. Then they give me money, I come and pay it to the school.”

Despite these challenges, Alonyo is determined to build a better future. Education and the promise of a daily meal through Feed The Hungry have given her a chance to heal, study, and dream again.
