From Ukraine, Malawi, Sri Lanka, Kenya, and Nepal… children who were living without food or hope, are now thriving and looking to the future.
Stories from the field
I love that time of the year when I get to send you the latest copy of our bi-annual newsletter, THE FIELD REPORT.
It’s our opportunity to show you lives that have been changed around the world because of your acts of kindness.
I have travelled to most of the countries featured in this edition, and I know our volunteer field workers first-hand. They do incredible work.
Praise Ijalisi in Malawi works with Mama Courageous at an orphanage that rescues street children. I have slept in his home and eaten with his family. They are honourable people.
Gwyn Williams is the former UK director and has now moved to Kenya, working full-time with Pastor Chris Okumu. I visited Ps Chris in his humble home in Kibera, the largest urban slum in Africa. Together, Gwyn and Chris are working in northern Kenya, in one of the driest places I have ever visited — Turkana.
Today I am writing this letter from Sri Lanka, where I will be joining Debs Edrisinghe and the team at Child Action Lanka to celebrate their 20th year of transforming lives in Sri Lanka. Debs has had many, many opportunities to migrate to other countries and seek a better life for her family, but she has chosen to stay and continue transforming lives.
By the time you receive this letter, I will probably have already left my second destination, Cambodia, where I am returning to visit Pastor Sokhon and Pastor Huy in Phnom Penh & Kampong Thom & across the nation.
Nepal is the third and final leg of my travels. This visit to Nepal has been planned for more than 12 months. Ps Ruben Basnet and his Kathmandu-based team have worked constantly to bring hope, relief and practical help in the aftermath of a terrible flood disaster to people in their community who have lost everything, including the ability to cry. There are simply no more tears to shed.
The Nepalese need the Prince of Peace, and His peace, the kind that passes understanding (Philippians 4).
In Nepal and around the world, we provide food in Jesus’ name — freely and without strings attached — to anyone and everyone in need. In return, we have such wonderful conversations and gently lead those who are willing into eternal life.
I travel with purpose to these countries, to see the work first-hand and ensure that our food reaches those who need it most. To assess the situation first-hand and offer any advice that I can.
I bring smiles, laughter and holy hugs of camaraderie to workers on the field who can sometimes feel utterly alone. My prayer is that through my presence, they can hear God’s voice through mine… even though God’s accent may sound different to what they are used too. Galatians 6 exhorts us to ‘weary not in your well doing’, but human connection makes this a command that much easier to accomplish.
I return from my travels as their voice to you, sharing their stories.
Our network of field workers around the world is solid and grounded, and we are all Kingdom-minded. We are co-labouring to fulfil the simple vision that was given to our founder, Dr Lester Sumrall, when he was challenged by Jesus in November 1987, with these words:
“My church, my children are dying of hunger before I return.
And I want you to do something about it…”
Obediently Dr Sumrall dedicated his life to that challenge, and since 2004, I have joined him in that purpose… doing something about it.
I know we’re not the biggest charity around. It let’s us be small enough to move quickly, with less than 50 paid staff worldwide. And yet big enough to make a difference which can be shown with one little statistic. The total number of children being fed every day in Jesus’ name has grown by over sixty thousand since we last mentioned it.
It is now 718,930!
This is only possible because of ordinary men and women like Praise, Gwyn, Chris, Sokhon, Huy, Debs, Ruben and many more, who simply said ‘yes’ to God when He asked,
‘Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?’ ~ Isaiah 6:8
You are part of this possibility as well. Thank you for your acts of kindness, your prayerful consideration and your generous action. Thank you for joining me and doing something about feeding hungry children.
You help to answer the prayers of vulnerable children who go to bed on an empty stomach praying the Lord’s Prayer because they mean it:
“Our Father who art in heaven…
Give us today our daily bread…”
Everyone gets hungry, but not everyone has access to the solution… until you step into the picture. You help to answer that prayer, and the 718,930 children and I are incredibly grateful to you for that.
Thank you so very much. May God bless you richly.
